Common Questions

 

 

1. How long do stoves, fireplaces or ranges take to to fit?

 

With standard straight chimney normally 1-2 days on stoves. Ranges and fireplaces would depend if any increase in size of the aperture (Chimney breast) would be required.

 

2. What are your lead times?

 

Subject to survey and diary committments/order times normally 2-4 weeks. Sometimes longer in peak periods and may also depend on the lead times from when the stove is ordered from the supplier.

 

 

3. It has been mentioned that if I have a stove fitted I must have my chimney lined, is this correct?

 

Not always. If the you know the chimney incorporates a clay liner which would indicate the build was after 1965, then the stainless steel 'sump adapter' may be fitted to existing liner. In older properties the old brick chimney is generally too large and will not be acceptable for modern day regulations. Sometimes it is essential to line the chimney in order to get the maximum heat back into the room and ensure the stove is not only safe but is working to the best of it's ability. Majority of the smaller stoves have a 5 inch ridged solid enamel pipe that comes off the stove. However, then this needs to be 'stepped up' to 6ins diameter, to allow 1 inch of 'build up' deposits per annum. This allows the stove to flue at the recommended 5 inch on a continuous basis. For example, if 5 inch were to be used all the way up the chimney the 'build up' would reduce it to 4 inches over a period. This would be a problem because the stove is designed to flue at a minimum of 5 inches at all times. Hence the necessity to increase to 6 inches. Having said this, chimneys are only lined by us if absolutely necessary as stated by HETAS regulations and occasionally it is possible to install a soot door for cleaning the chimney and no liner installed if the chimney is in good working order. However, it is impossible to determine this without a site survey. We would never insist on unnecessary work,and adhere to your budget - some fitters will do this purely for a their own financial gain, don't be caught out.

 

4. How do I chose the right stove for my needs?

 

We can assist and advise you when we come to survey the site or when you visit our showroom. However, makes of stoves are very often personal preference. We always recommend that you take time to read reviews, articles and do your research - ask for recommendations from family or friends. Different KW for different sized rooms are available. Look at the features of each stove and which best suits your needs and above all buy the best stove you can afford. We have some stoves on display for you to look at in our showroom. We will never supply, fit nor certainly guarantee 'cheap' imports. Not only are they unlikely to be CE approved (In European countries stoves must be tested to EN 13240 to be sold legally) even if it does have a CE or Kitemark some have been found to be fake. Some import stoves are often found to be made of cheap recycled metals which generally cannot withstand high temperatures making the metal warp and can be very dangerous. In our opinion, it is not worth the risk. If you pay a decent price for a well made stove and a well known brand it is more likely it will last you for years.

 

5. Can I buy my own stove and you fit it?

 

It can be impossible for us to guarantee the actual stove (also see above point about lower cost stoves) but if we do not supply the make and model you need then we can subject to survey. Our prices for stoves are very competitive and we aim to match any price you have been quoted (subject to proof). If you purchase your stove through ourselves we have a duty under the sale of goods act to remedy any manufacturing defects as covered by the guarantee. Even though internet firms are often very reputable, it is important to remember that legally the onus is not on us to remedy any of these problems if it develops a fault. Most people purchase stoves to save on fuel bills - is it worth the hassle if something goes wrong in the depths of winter and you are unable to use the stove? Would you be happy in those circumstances in trying to contact the dealer by email or phone rather then being able to physically visit them at a shop and sort the problem out quickly? Used stoves bought in private adverts and on ebay are impossible for us to guarantee.

 

6. How much will it cost?

 

If you are needing your chimney lined, then the cost of this needs to be taken into account. It is important to mention that there are different grades of stainless steel liners which are guaranteed for different periods of time, obviously the more expensive the longer it is guaranteed for. Add onto this the stove cost- which needs to be the correct KW for your room : too large a stove in a small room and the room will become too hot and vice versa and of course stove costs vary between the manufacturers. Costs such as providing a non combustable material hearth on which to sit the stove (if you do not already have one) will need to be taken into account. The surround (if needed) also will need to be of non combustable material, so if you have an existing surround in wood this is unlikely to be suitable to meet with safety regulations. Materials and items such as thermal boards (which have to be used where existing plasterboard is in the vincinty of the stove) are an additional cost. Aperture may need altering. The only way of getting an accurate quote rather then an estimate or 'ballpark' is for us to complete a site survey.

 

7. I have a restricted budget but I want to save money on fuel bills, do you offer used stoves for sale?

 

Yes we do and we rebuild them so they are 'like new' i.e. new glass, rope, grates etc which means there are savings to be made, we also have a 6 month guarantee with reconditioned stoves (new stoves generally carry 12 month manufacturers warranty sometimes up to 5 years). As we have over 24 years experience in supplying and fitting stoves we can ensure the job is done correctly throughly checked and to regulations. We can also fit these stoves for you, since we are supplying them in the same way as we would a new one.

 

8. I live in a smoke control area, do you offer stoves that will comply with this requirement?

9. I have heard that carbon monoxide poisoning can be produced by real fires, I thought it was only gas fires that did this, Is this correct? If so what can I do to prevent this?

 

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless poisonous gas, produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon based fuels. This can include oil, solid fuels including wood as well as gas. Carbon Monoxide can kill or make others ill and can be caused either by incorrect installation of the heater, lack of maintenance to appliance (and chimney) or insufficent air supply for the appliance to work correctly. Therefore it is essential a HETAS compliant fitter or service person carry out any installations/services or remedies to address these issues immediately to prevent this. Building Regulations state whenever a new or replacement fixed solid fuel or wood/biomass appliance is installed in a dwelling a carbon monoxide alarm must be fitted in the same room as the appliance. See HETAS for more information. Every home should have a carbon monoxide alarm regardless, it is as essential as a smoke alarm.

 

10. Do you buy used fireplaces/stoves and ranges?

 

Occasionally we do, the larger fire surrounds of non conbustable material are the most preferable and cast iron ranges. We regret that we do not purchase enamelled Ranges (1920's-1950's) or emamelled cooking Stoves (such as Aga's) since we do not have the facility to re-enamel and renovate. We ask that you email a picture with the amount you are expecting for the item to antiquefireplaces@yahoo.co.uk, if we are interested in purchasing we will get back to you asap. Please note, unless we replace the item you are selling i.e we are providing an upgrade from an antique range to a modern stove and installing it, it is unlikey due to time and ecomony that we can remove any items you wish to sell. The item must be uninstalled, dismantled (in the case of cast iron ranges) and ready to collect.

 

11. Do you offer a service or repair of stoves/ranges/fireplaces?

 

This is dependent on the following factors:

 

- The distance you are from us. As you can appreciate if we are more then an hour away from you, visiting and/or collecting the item in question to service or repair is expensive. There is the time factor as well as fuel expense. If you cannot find a suitable tradesman to complete this for you then the advice of your local chimney sweep may prove invaluable (see HETAS for the list the local area). Not only can they check out your chimney, but they are normally qualified to give basic advice on any safety issues associated with your chimney. It is likely they will work in conjuction with HETAS registered fitters and may be able to put you in touch with someone more local who can offer repair or servicing.

 

- Economy. If you have tried the manufacturers for spare parts and it exceeds the cost of the stove it may be time to think about replacing it (remember you need to add labour on for fitting those parts) . Common replacements are firebricks, glass, grates and rope seal. Occasionally manufacturers of cheaper stoves charge large amounts of money to provide spare parts - that can be how some make their money . Ranges we may have parts but we do not offer a postage service, a visit to our shop would be required.

 

- Safety. Can it be repaired so the item is safe and efficient or is it beyond this? We can generally advise this if you email or call us.

 

- Peak times. During peak times it can be very difficult for us to take time and care to repair or service. To avoid disappointment we recommend you approach us for any repairs etc in the off peak months - generally summer (May-late August).

 

12. Which areas do you cover?

 

All of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, North Wales, Merseyside. Further areas can be accomodated for a mileage/and or accomodation charge. This would be preferable for Ranges and Fireplaces and we have travelled from anywhere in the UK from Snowdonia to London.
